Guest Post: Red Letter Days Affiliate Cup 2011

Written by Sarah on . Posted in Interview

Following Affiliate Window’s recent victory at Red Letter Days Affiliate Cup day, we invited RLD, to provide a guest blog about the event:

For the third year running Red Letter Days held their annual Affiliate Cup on Thursday 14th July. The day was attended by Red Letter Days’, Affiliate Window and Affilinet staff plus numerous publishers including Nectar, Top Cash Back, Money Supermarket and Quidco.

The event is designed to give publishers an insight into the range of Red Letter Days experiences plus a chance to get closer to the brand; and in addition to reward them for their hard work and contribution to the success of the affiliate programme.

This year the day consisted of eight teams with each team comprising a network representative, a member of the Red Letter Days team and publishers. Their challenge was to complete various Bond inspired challenges to earn Spy Dollars, with the team with the most Spy dollars at the end of the day getting to take home the prestigious Red Letter Days Affiliate cup.

The day included a number of exciting activities, such as Axe Throwing, Sniper Shooting and Pistol draw, plus some mind boggling challenges such as Code Breaking and Safe Cracking.

For the past two years Affilinet have been the proud winners of the cup. They have successfully competed in Country Pursuit activities such as Archery, Quad biking, Segway driving, Blind Driving, Clay Pigeon Shooting and many more. However, this year Affilinet were not able to retain the cup, having to pass the trophy over to the winning Affiliate Window team.

Claire Baker, Team Leader, from Affiliate Window said: “As part of the Account Management team for Red Letter Days I get to experience the organisation’s precision and flair with which they run their programme on a first hand basis. But the way the Affiliate Day was planned and executed was on a whole other level. From the onset Red Letter Days set out to make this year’s event bigger and better than last. The ‘Spy Games’ theme had just the right mix of physical and mental challenges to get everyone involved. The day presented an excellent opportunity to get up to date with the plans of various Red Letter Days affiliates, and build upon these relationships. The day flew by and before we knew it, we were walking away with the shiny trophy which will have pride of place in our offices until next year.”

Last year’s winner Pete Berry, Publisher Services Manager from Affilinet said: “The 2011 Red Letter Days Affiliate Day was a great day all round. The activities struck the right balance between fun and the more important aspects of relationship building. The team approach encouraged networking; with numerous opportunities to catch up with publishers, clients and network staff. The entire day ran seamlessly and successfully apart from the scoring system; as we finally lost our grip on the trophy. For me the day was yet another prime example of Red Letter Days’ commitment to the affiliate channel.”

Where in the world?

Written by Sarah on . Posted in Network News

To mark the beginning of the summer holidays we’re running a fun competition for our affiliates to win enough to keep you in ice-cream all summer!

Every day next week, we’ll be posting a picture of an Affiliate Window or employee enjoying their summer get-away. All affiliates need to do is let us know where in the world they think we were. All correct answers will be entered into a prize draw to win £50 to spend on holiday essentials.

Make sure you are following our dedicated travel twitter account, where we’ll feature a new photo of someone from Affiliate Window or on their travels at 09:00 each day.

To enter, affiliates simply need to tweet @travel_aw and include their answer plus our hashtag: #whereareDW

All correct answers from affiliates, received before 23:59 on the competition day, will be entered into the daily prize draw. We’ll announce the winners soon after posting the next morning’s photo.

Even if you’re lucky enough to pick up the prize one day, you can still carry on entering. Plus affiliates can guess as many times as they like BUT we will only accept the last answer from each twitter account!

See here for full competition details and terms & conditions.

If you have a travel website – or any site that you would like to promote our advertisers on – but don’t yet have an affiliate account, click here to email me. I’ll help you through the quick process of registering so that you can take part in the competition as well.

Important Update: Firewall Upgrade

Written by Sam Surry on . Posted in Network News, Technology

On Tuesday 26th July we will be upgrading the firewalls at our primary datacenter to ensure the ongoing security of the network. To do this we need to physically disconnect our servers so that we can replace our existing hardware.

In order to minimise disruption to our affiliates this upgrade has been scheduled to take place between 02:00 and 04:00, however there may be additional short interruptions in the hours after the planned maintenance. We would like to stress that tracking will be unaffected – all sales data will be recorded and accounts will update across the day.  However, while we are offline you will not be able to access your affiliate account, your Darwin accounts or any of our websites.

If you use an API to call data directly from the network, then please check the time you usually action this request. To avoid any disruption to your service we recommend you re-schedule for mid afternoon on this date. If you are using the latest version of our ShopWindow API (aka ProductServe) this service will be unaffected. If you have any questions as to how the downtime may affect you, please e-mail

The tech team tasked with the firewall upgrade will be tweeting across the night – follow @AffWinTech for real-time updates.

Many thanks,

Affiliate Window

A4U Expo London 2011: What do you want to see?

Written by Lisa Chaikin on . Posted in Network News

For many the annual highlight in the affiliate marketing calendar is the A4U Expo and this year promises to be the biggest and best yet. The 2011 event will see the Expo being held in central London for the first time as the Hilton Metropole plays host to over 1,000 affiliate marketers.

The event has always been one that Digital Window is keen to show its support for. As the biggest annual marketplace for the industry it makes sense for the leading UK affiliate networks to be key sponsors.

In supporting the Expo we also get the chance to present to delegates and we’re always challenged with using these sessions as opportunities to share our research and insights.

In 2008 we highlighted the growth of incentivised traffic followed up in 2009 with a focus on cookie overwriting and disproving some common industry misconceptions. Last year we had two speaker slots, both sessions flagging internal research and analysis we carried out. Owen Hewitson took a further look at the cookie overwriting discussion, citing how voucher codes and cashback have little impact on other affiliate activity and I presented findings from a range of big retail programmes illustrating how affiliate categorisation is fundamentally flawed.

Every year we try and present something new hopefully using the huge database of information at our disposal. We’ve already been discussing what we think our potential audience would like to hear this year and we’re open to suggestions and ideas. Remember we have access to a wealth of data to explore (we’ve already recorded 10.5m transactions totalling over £700m this year), so we’re keen to know what you would like to see presented.

The official deadline for submitting your session ideas is the end of this week. To get a sense of what has been presented in previous years you can view the A4U Expo archives here:

You can also keep up to date with the latest news from the A4U guys as well as enjoy an early bird saving by visiting 2011’s official Expo site.

If you’d like to get involved and have an exciting idea to submit, please get in touch.

Important A4U Forum Update

Written by Sam Surry on . Posted in Network News, PerformanceIN

As of Monday 18th June, the Affiliate Window and sub-forums on the A4U will be combined, offering users streamlined access to the latest news and technical updates from both Digital Window networks.

Earlier this year the A4U implemented a new set of user guidelines, in order to create a visibly cleaner forum, improve user experience, increase industry debate & inevitably provide a better, more targeted service to their users. In case you missed it the first time round, here is a reminder of this important structural change.

What is the A4U?

The Affiliates4u website is an extremely useful tool which we actively encourage all of our partners to utilise. With a regularly updated News section, independent reports, guest features plus the well established forum, it has become the first port of call for all parties within the performance channel.

What are the new forums?

The A4U now has three new forums; Voucher Codes, New/Closing Programmes and Network/Merchant Incentives & Promotion. Any post that relates to these three categories should not be posted in the main network forum, but instead be featured in one or all of the above.

What forum would I check for network news/updates?

Network news can now be found in the Affiliate Window & forum.

Where do I post my promotional messages?

All promotional messages should be published in one of the three new forums; Voucher Codes, New/Closing Programmes and Network/Merchant Incentives & Promotion.

For example, a post that announces a new programme launch, coupled with a launch incentive for affiliates, could be posted in both New/Closing Programmes and Network/Merchant Incentives & Promotion. An advertiser who releases a voucher code at the same time as a new product line could post the same communication in Voucher Codes and Network/Merchant Incentives & Promotion. Alternatively, separate messages can be tailored for each forum. There is also an Affiliate Window & Advertiser Promotions sub-forum which can be used for any promotional message.

Why have the A4U implemented these changes?

By splitting the programme news into these 3 forums it allows affiliates to utilise the RSS feeds much more easily & benefit from more targeted network feeds.

A large number of A4U users also use the ‘new posts’ button and would rather not see programme promotions taking up most of their results. By restricting the programme promotion posts within the three new forums, A4U can allow the discussion content to be more visible initially, encouraging more interaction with the forum.

How do I write the perfect promotional post?

To help you maximise your affiliate communications, here are some top tips for a perfect post:

1. Summarise your post content in the opening paragraph, so affiliates don’t have to read through the entire article to find out what you are offering them. It’s about engaging your audience right from the start!

2. Supply clear start and end dates for your activity, even if that is ‘while stocks last’, as it allows affiliates to plan their promotional activity.

3. If there are any terms & conditions or exemptions to your activity make sure they are clearly stated, especially if they prohibit affiliates from earning commission, e.g. this incentive is only open to affiliates who have not previously generated sales on the programme.

4. Provide relevant links within your post, ideally complete with your AWin tracking; this will save affiliates precious time and encourage greater promotion of your products.

5. Finally, add your contact details! If affiliates have any questions regarding your latest activity you want to make it as easy as possible for them to get in touch.

I still have questions, who can I speak to?

If you have any queries regarding the new structure please speak to your network account contact, or e-mail Chris Johnson at the A4U.
